Most San Diegans can attest to the fact that tacos are typically pictured alongside a salt-rimmed cocktail or an ice cold cerveza, but this August the Cohn Restaurant Group is shaking things up with the debut of a new perfectly paired sip. Enter COSTA TIERRA, the first Baja wine produced in partnership with a U.S.-owned restaurant group. Cohn Restaurant Group’s Beverage Director (and notable wine stud), Maurice DiMarino intended the red blend to be drank as an easy, approachable sipper that pairs perfectly with carne asada tacos—and what’s more, he created the blend with one of the oldest and most revered wineries in all of Baja, the beloved Bodegas de Santo Tomás.
Starting August 29th, the Cohn Restaurant Group will be offering COSTA TIERRA by the bottle at five of their local CRG establishments including Coasterra and Island Prime on Harbor Island, Indigo Grill in Little Italy, BO-beau kitchen + garden in La Mesa, and Vintana in Escondido. Select locations will also offer by the glass pours, and the bottle will be available for retail sale at Island Prime, Coasterra and Vintana.
ABOUT COSTA TIERRA | Hailing from Baja’s Santo Tomás Valley, COSTA TIERRA (meaning seacoast and land) was blended by Cohn Restaurant Group in partnership with Bodegas de Santo Tomás winery. A man with an affinity for south of the border viniculture, Beverage Director and certified sommelier Maurice DiMarino made it his mission to find a worthy, vine-ripened ally for the Mexican cuisine so synonymous with San Diego’s own culinary landscape. DiMarino worked closely with Laura Zamora, winemaker of Santo Tomás, blending the wine using equal parts Tempranillo, Syrah and Barbera. Simple, affordable and authentic, COSTA TIERRA’s fusion of black and red grapes produce a juicy, full bodied addition to the beverage menus at Coasterra, Island Prime, Indigo Grill, BO-beau kitchen + garden and Vintana.
“We’re incredibly honored to be partnering with such a well respected Baja producer such as Santo Tomás for our first collaboration,” says Beverage Director, Maurice DiMarino, of the Cohn Restaurant Group. “With this wine, we aim to showcase a symbiotic relationship between California and Baja California. For centuries we’ve shared the same sea-coast, the same land and the same people. When it comes to food and wine, the border is a fictitious border. We may speak different languages and celebrate different holidays, but we both share in the rewards of a thriving epicurean future.”
