Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center, a garden and nutrition education center, will celebrate its 2019 Seedling Soirée event on Saturday, June 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Olivewood’s historic 6.85-acre property in National City. The organization’s mission is to empower students and families to be healthy and active citizens through gardening, environmental stewardship, and nutrition education. Taking place in the gardens, the farm-to-table feast under the stars will feature San Diego’s best brewers, chefs, distillers, vintners and a one-of-a-kind menu consisting of local, organic ingredients and produce. Proceeds from the Seedling Soirée will support Olivewood Gardens’ various programs including its science-based environmental education lessons, hands-on gardening, and hands-on cooking classes for children and families from underserved communities.
“We are so excited to celebrate this special evening in Olivewood’s early summer garden with friends, family, and sponsors,” said Claire Groebner, Director of Development of Olivewood Gardens. “The Seedling Soirée allows us to give back to the San Diego community and provide hands-on nutrition classes to children, adults, and families. We could not do it without the support of our amazing sponsors, volunteers, and featured chefs!”
Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center will kick off the evening with Twilight Cocktails and Appetizers from 5-7 p.m. and continue with the Chef’s Culinary Feast from 7-9 p.m. The night will be filled with live music, garden-inspired cocktails and appetizers, fine cuisine, silent and live auctions and more. The event’s emcee will be award-winning Chef Claudia Sandoval, winner of the sixth season of MasterChef U.S. and a judge on MasterChef Latino. Featured chefs include Davin Waite of The Plot and Wrench & Rodent, the Olivewood Kitchenistas, Phillip Esteban of CH Projects, Christina Ng of Chinita’s Pies, Jeff Rossman of Terra American Bistro, DJ Tangalin of Bivouac Ciderworks, Kevin Templeton of barelymash, The Smoking Gun and Spill the Beans, and Joe Pastry of Waters Fine Foods & Catering and WooBar. Additional featured food and beverage items will be created by the Berry Good Food Foundation, Royale!, Brew Bar and Cutwater Spirits. Throughout the event, guests can learn about the organization’s programs and wander through the gardens.
Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center’s purpose is to build healthy families and a healthy environment by encouraging individuals to make healthy nutritional choices and advocate for health in their community. Proceeds from the event make it possible for Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center to provide children and adults with educational programs to teach them how to grow, cook and enjoy tasty, healthy foods.
The organization offers a children’s program consisting of ecological, academic, and culinary lessons to build scientific literacy and environmental awareness. Garden-based education encourages children, teachers, and parents to explore connections between plants and the natural world. During the program, students learn how to cook in the demonstration kitchen from chefs and are taught age-appropriate, flavorsome recipes featuring seasonal produce from the garden. In addition to the children’s program, Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center’s Cooking for Salud™ is a 7-week bilingual parent nutrition program that inspires participants to change their cooking and eating habits and prepare healthy meals at home. Instruction is taught by chef volunteers and centered around food and nutrition.

About Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center
Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is a garden and nutrition education center located in National City, CA.
