Saffron Thai has opened a second location in La Jolla just over 33 years after chef Su-Mei Yu established the restaurant’s original outpost on India Street in San Diego’s Mission Hills neighborhood. The new Saffron at 1055 Torrey Pines Road, near the heart of downtown La Jolla, features over 2,000 square feet of inviting indoor and outdoor dining. Guests can enjoy all of their favorite Saffron dishes, including Su-Mei’s famous Salad Rolls, Thai Grilled Chicken, Stir Fries, Noodle Soups and flavorful Curries, plus several new selections like beach friendly Curry Wraps. The menu continues to emphasize Su-Mei’s philosophy of “food for the mind, body and soul” with a wide range of healthy choices, most of which are available gluten free and / or vegetarian, and all under $13.50.
The expansion comes almost 2 years after Yu joined forces with San Diego hospitality firm Karina’s Group. Also successful veteran restaurateurs with popular dining establishments like Karina’s Mexican Seafood, Savoie Italian Eatery and Karina’s Ceviches & More, Karina’s Group has contributed their design and operational expertise along with the capital needed to create the new Saffron and revamp the look of the original location. The La Jolla space, which previously housed Chipotle, underwent a significant facelift under the guidance of Karina’s Group’s David Contreras Curiel. The result is a welcoming and bright eatery where guests can enjoy a casual meal or conveniently order / pickup food to go.
“Saffron has been such an on-going success story that we wanted to share it with other parts of San Diego, and La Jolla was a natural choice,” Curiel says. “The new space is large enough to accommodate a good number of guests, but small enough that we can maintain the high quality of food, service and environment customers expect.”
Su-Mei Yu, a long-time La Jolla resident, is thrilled with the opening of the new location. “I’m so excited to finally be able to expand Saffron with the help of Karina’s Group,” says Yu. “The new restaurant beautifully encompasses the essence of my original creation while offering the same high quality, healthy and flavorful fare our customers have enjoyed for over 33 years on India Street.”
Saffron Thai La Jolla is currently open daily from 11am to 9pm at 1055 Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, California 92037. Hours will extend to 10pm daily in early 2019. Customers can call the restaurant at (858) 263-4324 for additional information or to place takeout orders.
