The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) is calling all players, beach-goers, and sports enthusiasts to the biggest summer event in San Diego! The 65th Annual World Championship Over-the-Line (OTL) Tournament will take place on July 14-15 and July 21-22 at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay. Over 1,200 teams will hit the sand at sunrise on Saturday morning, July 14, with their bats, balls and most creative team names to kick off 65 years of San Diego tradition.
The first three game days will start promptly each morning at 7:30 a.m. and continue until sunset, concluding on Sunday afternoon, July 22, with the Men’s Open Championship. Games will be three innings only for the first weekend of the tournament and four innings during the second weekend. The tournament will follow a double-elimination format for all participating teams in all nine divisions.
This summertime staple draws teams from all over the world but Over-the-Line originated right here in San Diego. The sport has grown dramatically from a few friends playing ball in the sand to an annual two-weekend tournament that attracts thousands of players and spectators.
For Craig and Janet Engelman, OTL is a unique San Diego family tradition. Not only does OTL fund charitable work OMBAC does throughout the year, it has become a huge part of their life. Craig and Janet started playing in the OMBAC OTL tournament over 30 years ago. It is where they met, where they have excelled competitively, made lifelong friends, and have had a great time enjoying the beach.
“OMBAC has been an integral part of the San Diego community as long as I can remember,” said Craig. “The organization does a lot to support local sports and has a significant charitable impact in our community – and never forget to have a good time while they’re at it.”
Craig grew up playing beach volleyball in Imperial Beach and naturally transitioned into OTL as another beach game after graduating from high school. Janet grew up playing Over the Line since her mom, a 10-time champion, was involved in the game. The couple have each enjoyed tremendous success on the sand. Janet has won 8 times and Craig has won 5 times. They are the only husband and wife to win a championship in the same year.
Continued Janet, “OTL has had a huge impact on our lives. It is a fantastic social environment and a great competitive outlet. We’ve made hundreds of lifelong friends.”
