Melding fast and fine dining, Monello is introducing a new lunchtime service that offers a compact menu highlighting its Milanese street food roots. Guests will order lunch from a new walk-up window, take a number, select a seat on the sunny patio or inside the chic dining room and food will be delivered tableside in a few short minutes. Ordering at the counter is popular, but not so much for an Italian restaurant. Thus, Monello will lead a double life: fast and fine during the day, but when the clocks strikes at 3pm, it will transition back to its award-winning aperitivo and dinner service.
Chef Fabrizio has orchestrated a minimalistic approach to the mid-day eats menu that includes Monello’s street food favorites loved by its patrons for the past five years. Food orders are prepared under 10 minutes and range from crispy, crunchy street food (panzerotti, arancini; seafood and veggies); stuffed roll bites (piadine); panini with porchetta (herb roasted pork) or fried chicken or fried fish paired with Parmigiano French fries; hand cut pizzas (including a vegan option); a selection of fresh pastas “street food style” served in paper cups, with top seller sauces; as well as salads, protein plates and gelato. A good selection of cocktails, wine and beer will be also available.
“Guido and I strive to evolve and freshen our concept while staying true to ourselves and our Italian tradition “said Valentina Di Pietro, co-owner of Monello and acclaimed Bencotto next door. “There are limited fast-casual options in Little Italy and we’ve heard from guests who’d love more fast and fine choices at lunchtime, especially Italian. At the same time, we were inspired by high-quality food served in a marketplace style on every corner during our walks down the streets of Milan on our recent visits. In Italy too, street food has become a culinary obsession.”
Continued Guido, “Monello is not transforming into a fast-casual venue. Our food is not changing, is just served differently. The concept is wearing a fast and fine uniform at lunch time. Our quality will be served at a faster pace yet in the same Milanese casual-chic location. We understand the cravings of the public and Monello’s street food delivers very well to this ever-growing demand. Patrons will feel less committed at lunchtime, which mean convenience and value for them and for us.”
Guests can indulge in Monello’s affordable and expeditious street food eats at lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 3pm.
Monello, an endearing Italian reference to a “naughty little boy”, was created by the same family known for San Diego’s “best Italian restaurant”: Bencotto Italian Kitchen. The “100 percent honest Italian” menu celebrates Northern Italian street foods and Milan’s glamorous aperitivo culture featuring expertly-crafted cocktails and complimentary “tastes from the cook.” The restaurant offers lunch, aperitivo, dinner and weekend brunch. The menu spans a variety of 1000 pounds of fresh pasta produced every week. Monello is San Diego’s very first house of the Parmiginano Reggiano wheel of cheese pasta and risotto, prepared and served tableside.
