Celebrated Chef, Owner Carl Schroeder to Commemorate Anniversary with 10-Course Dinner and Pairing
Since opening 10 years ago, MARKET Restaurant + Bar, located at 3702 Via De La Valle in Del Mar, has remained one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Southern California with owner and executive chef, Carl Schroeder, at the helm.
In celebration of the milestone, Schroeder will host two commemorative 10-course dinner and wine pairings that will honor some of the most popular dishes since MARKET’s opening in 2006. Held Thursday, Nov. 10 and Friday, Nov. 11, the dinners will begin at 6 p.m. Featured dishes include Cabernet braised prime beef short ribs, miso-marinated cod “hot pot,” blue cheese soufflé and the smoked prime rib eye cap, among others.
Since opening MARKET, Schroeder has been selected as a James Beard Award semi-finalist for “Top Chef – Pacific” three times: in 2008, 2011 and 2013; as well as has been lauded by Bon Appétit, Gourmet, San Diego Union-Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, San Diego Magazine, Coastal Living, Hotel Bel Air Magazine, Art Culinaire and more. MARKET is consistently ranked one of the top restaurants in Southern California by Open Table, Yelp, Trip Advisor, Zagat and more.
The foundation for MARKET’s menu comes from fresh, locally-sourced and hand-selected ingredients by Schroeder, who is a La Jolla, Calif. native. The dishes represent flavors found in the San Diego area, with produce, seafood and meat all sourced from local, independently-owned farms and markets. The cocktail menu is a reflection of local ingredients, as well, with new cocktails continually introduced to showcase new fruits as they are in season. The award-winning wine list has a worldwide selection of boutique wineries, with each wine reflecting the highest level of quality.
After graduating from the esteemed Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, in 1996, Schroeder spent much of his early career in the Bay Area, working with legendary chefs Michael Mina at Aqua in San Francisco and Bradley Ogden at Lark Creek Inn in Larkspur. He returned to his hometown of San Diego in 2002 to rejoin Ogden as executive chef of Arterra Restaurant in Del Mar, where he received numerous accolades including “Best Hotel Chef Series” by the James Beard Foundation and “California Chef of the Year” by the California Travel Industry Association, both in 2004. Schroeder went on to open MARKET with his business partner, celebrated restaurateur, Terryl Gavre, in 2006.
The dinners are priced at $325 per person with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Seating is limited, and reservations are available by calling the restaurant at 858-523-0007. More information about the anniversary dinner and MARKET’s full menu are available at www.marketdelmar.com.
Autographed copies of Schroeder’s cookbook, “MARKET Restaurant + Bar,” will be available for purchase at the dinner. The cookbook debuted in late 2015 and features recipes for dozens of MARKET’s most popular dishes, including a few that will be served at the anniversary dinner.
