Cardellino is the latest concept by Trust Restaurant Group which includes the acclaimed Trust Restaurant (Hillcrest-San Diego’s Best New Restaurant 2019),  Fort Oak (Mission Hills), and retro steakhouse Rare Society (University Heights).

A cafe and bakery by day, and full service restaurant by night, the menu will feature antipasti, pizzas, pastas, insalatas and piatti arrostito inspired by Co-Owner and Executive Chef Brad Wise’s old world travels, as well as favorites from his New Jersey upbringing. The entire Cardellino experience is fashioned after a neighborhood eatery where generations gather daily to enjoy East Coast Italian share plates, coffee and cocktails. Guests can cozy up in the modern Italian farmhouse styled dining room or linger on the sidewalk patio. Here simplicity and quality create a welcoming gathering place.

Executive Pastry Chef Jeremy Harville will oversee a bustling on-site bakery offering a revolving selection of European inspired pastries and baked goods, as well as sandwiches and salads served in quick-service fashion. Neighborhood roaster, Heartwork Coffee, will collaborate on Cardellino’s coffee and espresso program which will feature an exclusive roast created for TRG.

Beverage Director Frank McGrath’s cocktail menu will showcase kitchen-connected libations riffing on Italian classics, as well as Italian-ice slushies – many crafted with house made wine reduced syrups – and a thoughtfully curated list of local and Italian beers.

Enoteca: As every Italian knows, there is truth in wine or “nel vino c’è la verità”. Co-Owner Steve Schwob directs the bottle shop where guests can choose from a 48-bottle selection and sip onsite or take home with a to-go order.

Mr. Trustee: Harville is also putting the finishing touches on the offerings at Mr. Trustee Ice Cream Shop where rotating seasonal flavors of hand crafted ice cream and soft serve will be offered from a street side, walk-up window. The frozen treats will be scooped and served starting in February 2020.

Private Events: Within Cardellino is a 16-seat private event space, fully-equipped with audio-visual equipment, providing the perfect setting for intimate celebrations or exclusive corporate retreats.

Design: Inspired by the Italian way of a life focused on pleasure and simple luxuries, the GTC and Second Sight teams collaborated to bring Cardellino’s concept to life with references to classic Italian food packaging, weathered street signs and the lure of the countryside. The subdued color palette of daily special chalkboard charcoal, proofing dough and cream white reinforce the made-fresh-daily mantra. Geometric patterns with shapes inspired by noodles and Italian clay tile patterns are showcased on the exterior windows and the bakery wall mural. The brick wall dividing the private dining room from the main dining room features a mural paying homage to Italian tomato paste can labels. Both of Cardellino’s murals were painted by local artist, Grand Prestoz.

Located at 4033 Goldfinch Street, San Diego, CA 92103, Cardellino is open from 7:30 am – 9 pm on the weekdays and until 10 pm on the weekends. Weekend brunch will be served on Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 am – 2:30 pm.  For reservations, visit Follow Cardellino on Facebook and Instagram @cardellinorestaurant.
