For over 33 years the Karina’s Mexican Seafood restaurants in San Diego’s South Bay have delighted customers with an expansive collection of fresh ceviches, cocteles and frescas and traditional Mexican specialties. Now the popular restaurant group has brought its famous mariscos to downtown San Diego at the corner of 10th and B Street.
Karina’s extensive Mexican seafood offerings range from an unrivalled selection of ceviches, or refreshing, excitingly flavored dishes of seafood “cooked” in lime juice with a variety of seasonings, to a giant collection of hot and cold appetizers – even rare caracol served abalone-style, and the enjoyably named shrimp “cucarachas.” Tempting seafood cocktails (cocteles) are packed with scallops, shrimp, octopus and clams, alone or in combination, and the famous Campechana cocktail has plenty of everything, including bold, exciting flavors. As at Karina’s hugely popular South Bay restaurants, oysters, mussels and clams are served in the shell, and the delicious rendition of oysters Rockefeller is among the prides of the menu. House favorites include enchiladas stuffed with marlin and cheese, tostadas with crabmeat or aguamashi, seafood combination plates with a choice of many delicious sauces, and lobster grilled Puerto Nuevo-style. The many shrimp and calamari entrees are offered in a dozen or so styles, from breathtakingly spicy “Deviled style,” to the rich, soothing comfort of creamy, spinach-based Popeye sauce. And there’s more, including steaks and carne asada for those who prefer dry land to saltwater.
The 4,500 square-foot restaurant’s design features modern rustic elements with colorful accents, custom wall coverings and specially commissioned murals and sculpture inspired by Mexican art and culture. Lockers in which tequila aficionados store their collections offer both a striking design feature in the restaurant and a clever customer perk. The new Karina’s Mexican Seafood Downtown creates an irresistibly warm, inviting environment in a space enlivened by whimsy, color and the proud Mexican heritage of the Contreras-Curiel Family.
Located just blocks from the downtown financial district, Copley Symphony Hall, the Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park, the new downtown location seats 125 in the bar, lounge and dining area, and testifies to the vision of Don Arnulfo Contreras, who in 1981 opened an eatery specializing in ceviches and seafood dishes from his native Sinaloa, and named it for his eldest daughter.
