August 16th is National Rum Day, and since we aren’t able to travel to tropical islands to sip fruity concoctions to celebrate this year, we decided to showcase the best rum drinks found around San Diego! We’ve also added in a bonus recipe you can recreate if you feel like celebrating from home.
Raise a toast to National Rum Day with the Duck Dive’s Tropic Like Its Hot! The refreshing blend of Rumhaven Caribbean Rum, fresh mint, coconut cream, blood orange, pineapple, and lime juice, is served in a fun and festive coconut cup, garnished with an orchid. Pair with any of the Duck Dive’s coastal classic fare, and enjoy on the patio, where you can kick back and feel the cool ocean breeze. Stop by any time between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Come check out all the outdoor dining (and drinking) options available at Farmer’s Bottega, in the Mission Hills neighborhood. Just one sip of the Paddle Out cocktail, a fruity mix of Rumhaven Coconut Rum, Myer’s Dark Rum, pineapple, orange, and guava juice, and you’re sure to be hooked. Farmer’s Bottega features a Sunday Happy Hour, from 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. What a great way to celebrate!
Little Italy’s Cloak & Petal is known for their authentic Japanese sushi, appetizers, and small plates, but did you know they also have an impressive cocktail lineup? On National Rum Day, sip the Born and Dayzed, a photo-worthy drink comprised of rums from Barbados and Martinique, velvet falernum, passion fruit, and fresh lime juice. Cloak & Petal has plenty of outdoor seating, or you can order from the to-go menu, where all cocktails are two-for-one. Open Noon to 10:00 p.m. on Sundays!
The Smoking Gun’s cocktail menu features drinks named after iconic retro hairstyles, and we’re all about The Surfer Cut on National Rum Day. Dark rum, Jagermeister Cold Brew, coconut liqueur, fresh pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice make up this tasty drink, best described as “surf’s up in a cup!” The Smoking Gun has extended their outdoor patio along Market Street, offering plenty of space to dine and drink, and is open Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Searching for a spot with a view of the beach, so you can truly take advantage of National Rum Day? Look no further than Pacific Beach Alehouse! Make your way up to the rooftop deck, and enjoy the This ‘Ish is Bananas, a frozen colada cocktail consisting of Captain Morgan White rum, Coco Real, pineapple juice, and creme de banana. This cocktail goes perfectly with the fresh Ahi Tuna Nachos. PB Alehouse is open 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. on Sundays, and you can now also order your favorite cocktails to-go.
Located along Pacific Beach’s Garnet Avenue, Break Point knows a thing or two when it comes to celebrating. The beachside destination features bowling, food, and fun bowling-inspired cocktails including their classic King Pin Mojito. King Pin Mojito
- 2 oz. Bacardi (or Rum of your choice)
- .75 oz Lime
- .75 oz Simple Syrup
- Mint Leaves
- Blackberries and Lime for Garnish
- Tall Glass
- Juice lime
- Add rum, lime juice, simple syrup and mint leaves into cocktail shaker
- Give a few hard shakes and pour into tall glass with ice
- Garnish with lime and blackberry
