Finding Rum Cocktails

When you envision sipping a tropical rum cocktail on the beach or next to a pool, what automatically comes to mind? A fruity piña colada or maybe a sweet daiquiri?! To celebrate National Rum Day on August 16th, we want to introduce you to some new and different versions of adult beverages that incorporate rum as a main ingredient, so we’ve compiled some of the most delicious cocktails at hotspots around San Diego!

Head to Mission Beach and check out Miss B’s Coconut Club, a Caribbean-inspired bar and eatery that features rum in many of their creative craft cocktails. The Caribe Welcome, which comes served in a hollowed-out coconut, is a must-try! The island-inspired blend of Puerto Rican Rum, apricot brandy, Coco Lopez, coconut water and fresh lime juice will leave you feeling totally refreshed.

Cloak & Petal invites guests to come unwind in the intimate, Little Italy spot, located on the corner of India and Grape Street. Sit beneath blooming Japanese cherry blossom trees and delight in the creative list of craft cocktails, including Born & Dayzed. This tiki-inspired cocktail that is not too sweet, but a very unique treat indeed, consists of a mix of rum from Martinique and Barbados, fresh passion fruit, citrus of lime, Caribbean spiced falernum and just a hint of absinthe. Prepare to be dazzled as the drink is adorned with a beautiful orchid flower.

Celebrate National Rum Day with unobstructed ocean views and some of San Diego’s best sips at Waterbar! Found alongside the vibrant ocean-front board walk in Pacific Beach, Waterbar offers flavor-forward craft cocktails, such as The Conch of Triton made with Appleton Estate rum, Gran Mariner, lime, orgeat, simple syrup and passionfruit foam. Pair with an order of Fried Calamari and raise a glass to this boozy holiday.

Another iconic rum-based cocktail we can’t get enough of is the Hurricane and The Smoking Gun has got a delicious version on their drink menu! Stop into this a retro bar, found in the Gaslamp District, on National Rum Day to enjoy the blend of dark and white rum, passionfruit, cold-pressed OJ, lime and house grenadine.

Though known for their collection of over 2,800 whiskeys, The Whiskey House also serves craft cocktails including the Hemingway Daiquiri with WhiteRum, grapefruit and lime, and maraschino liqueur. Stop by on National Rum Day to savor the flavor and enjoy with the sharable Baja Fish Tacos, made with battered whitefish, pico, guac and chipotle cream. Yum!

There is no better place to enjoy a tropical drink than on a patio with views overlooking the beach – and Pacific Beach Shore Club has just that! Feel the cool ocean breeze while relaxing with a drink or two in celebration of National Rum Day. Sip the Painkiller, a blend of Pussers British Navy rum, Pussers Gunpowder rum, OJ, pineapple juice, cream of coconut and nutmeg, with $1 from each drink donated to the Wingman Foundation. You can also enjoy the fruity Mango Tango, with Malibu Pineapple, Malibu Mango, house agave mix, Mixwell Grapefruit Soda and bitters!
