Let’s name off all of the great things about pizza: feeds a lot (or a hungry few), fits every occasion and satisfies at any time of day. Some pizza fans fiercely debate over the best toppings or dough, but on Sunday, Feb. 9, San Diegans can celebrate National Pizza Day with a slice – or tray – of their favorite dish. We’ve listed some of the best places in San Diego to enjoy a worldwide classic.

Calling all authentic pizza lovers to Monello, San Diego’s Italian street-food haven. This Little Italy eatery offers thin-crust pizza that undergoes a four-day fermentation process resulting in slices of light, crispy deliciousness. Try their Picante Pizza ($19), featuring mozzarella, arrabbiata sauce and spicy salame. While “arrabbiata” translates to “angry” in Italian, there’s nothing to be upset about with a spicy slice of perfection.

7 Mile Kitchen

Situated near Carlsbad’s 7 miles of coastline at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, 7 Mile Kitchen offers Californian cuisine for beachgoers, shoppers and travelers alike in the North County community. The Carbonara Pizza ($17) – with parmesan, mozzarella and a velvety béchamel sauce – includes prosciutto, mushroom, farm egg and spinach toppings. Gluten-free folks fear not, request their gluten-free pizza dough for any pizza so you won’t miss out on the fun.

The Corner Drafthouse

Pizza toppings can make or break a pizza, but Executive Chef Ruben Zamarripa and The Corner Drafthouse team chose the perfect toppings for their Roasted Veggie Flatbread ($16). It comes with pesto sauce, seasonal veggies, cheddar, jack, and goat cheese and is topped with arugula, grape tomatoes and pickled onions. Indulge in this flatbread with one of their 72 drafts before exploring iconic Balboa Park, Bankers Hill or downtown San Diego.

The Bier Garden of Encinitas

Coast along Highway 101 to The Bier Garden of Encinitas. While your pup chows down on a dog-friendly dish, try their BBQ Chicken Flatbread ($14) featuring chicken breast, fresh mozzarella, gouda cheese, red onions and cilantro. It’s a pizza-perfect energizer after walking around the historic beach community with your four-legged friend.

10 Barrel Brewing Co. in East Village.

The pub offers over ten different unique, handcrafted pies with house-made pizza dough. Check out the border-inspired Elote pizza which features four cheese sauce, smoked pork shoulder, grilled and smoked corn, jalapeño, scallion, mozzarella, chili lime crema and cilantro, or try the Jaca, the favorite choice of 10 Barrel’s first-ever employee Jake Jaca which features garlic cream sauce, shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, pulled pork, sausage, pineapple and jalapenos.

Hillcrest’s newest hot spot, Rusticucina, where locally sourced ingredients, seasonal dishes and a warm ambiance reign supreme, offers an array of delicious pizzas. Their Mortadella Tortilla Pizza is layered with pistachio pesto, mozzarella cheese, burrata, mortadella and topped with fresh pistachios, while their Spinach and Fig, features Mascarpone cheese, crispy prosciuttos, fig jam and fresh spinach. Rusticucina also offers a traditional Italian-style happy hour, with Aperitivo’s leading the way, along with a full bar and an impressive wine list.

With locations in La Mesa, Little Italy and North Park, Farmer’s Table beings a slate of wood-fired pizzas to the forefront. Their signature Truffle Pizza, is loaded with fresh Mozzarella, bacon, radicchio, caramelized onions, asparagus and black truffle—and is absolutely sensational. If you’re opting for a meat-free pizza, their Margherita Pizza, features fresh Mozzarella, homemade tomato sauce and fresh basil, is simple, yet epic. Be sure to take in their striking wine list and carefully curated cocktail selections while you’re there, too!

Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza has been known for their gourmet pizzas for decades, with their Goat Cheese Pizza being a fan-favorite. Generously topped with sautéed mushrooms, garlic, organic spinach, red onion, and, of course, goat cheese, it’s sure to satiate your palate. If you’re craving dessert for dinner, their Lover’s Delight Pizza, topped with fresh strawberries, almonds, mint, goat cheese and finished with a generous chocolate drizzle, on a crispy French style crust, is a must-have! In addition, $1 from every dessert pizza ordered will go to the Ronald McDonald House—Sammy’s way of showing love!

Farmer’s Bottega, located in Mission Hills, boasts mouthwatering pizzas that will undeniably hit the spot! If you’re in the mood for something savory, their Pork Belly Pizza showcases house-made basil pesto, fresh Mozzarella, local baby kale, goat cheese, and, of course, plenty of pork belly.
