Developed by Sardinia, Italy natives and long-time friends Marco Saba and Andrea Racca, Bobboi Natural Gelato has quickly become one of the nation’s top spots for gelato. Located at 8008 Girard Ave. in La Jolla, Calif., Bobboi Natural Gelato combines the authenticity and techniques of Italy’s world-famous gelato with Southern California’s freshest, seasonal ingredients to create homemade flavors daily.
Within its first two years, Bobboi Natural Gelato earned the No. 8 ranking in Yelp’s “Top 100 best Reviewed Places to Eat in America” and Yahoo Food’s No. 2 pick for “Best Ice Cream Shops in America,” which can be attributed to the gelateria’s dedication to quality, local ingredients and exceptional flavors. Each gelato selection is made in-house daily and the process starts with fresh, organic milk and sugar, and incorporates fresh, seasonal ingredients from farms and markets in Southern California. Organic ingredients are used whenever possible.
“Bobboi is a venture of happiness for us, as it was a lifelong dream for each of us to share Italy’s world-famous gelato to the United States,” says co-founder/owner Racca. “We love making delicious, homemade gelato, but seeing the smiles on our customers’ faces after their first bite of Bobboi gelato is the real reward.”
While the menu changes daily, popular flavors include dark cholate sorbet, a smooth blend of French Valrhona cocoa and dark chocolate; charcoal vanilla, made with Tahitian vanilla and bamboo-activated carbon; salted caramel, made with Mediterranean sea salt; pistachio della California, made with roasted organic pistachios from Santa Barbara, Calif.; Meyer lemon and mint, made with freshly squeezed lemons purchased weekly at the La Jolla Open Aire Farmers Market; and moka, made with organic Indo Noir coffee beans from local roaster, Pannikin Coffee & Tea. Gelato may be served in a waffle cone or cup, with sizes options including piccolo, medio and grande. Guests may also purchase gelato to-go by the pound.
In addition, Bobboi offers an array of coffee selections, made to order on its vintage 1961 Italian coffee machine using coffee beans from Pannikin Coffee & Tea. Among the coffee and tea options, Bobboi’s gelato may be ordered affogato, with one scoop of gelato drowned in a double shot of espresso.
The quaint 850-square-foot gelateria is located on picturesque Girard Ave. in La Jolla, and has the impression of being built by hand. With a focus on sustainability, Racca and Saba built much of the restaurant themselves, laying reclaimed wood on the floors and handpicking all of the materials used, including the ceiling. Bobboi seats 19 guests, who may enjoy views of La Jolla cove from the outside patio.
