Cloak & Petal Lands in Little Italy

Japanese Manhattan

The much-awaited addition to Little Italy’s thriving culinary scene, Cloak & Petal has finally arrived! Situated along India Street’s bustling stretch, the 7,500-sq. ft. space is bringing “Japanese social dining” to the area. By melding artful dishes with fresh sushi, sashimi and nigiri, the eatery’s robust and elevated scene is designed for social gatherings, making this an inevitable hotspot in San Diego’s restaurant realm.

Soft Shell Crab Roll

Cloak & Petal’s space is reminiscent of an abandoned Tokyo subway, showcasing a “hanami-inspired” cherry blossom tree, characterized by cascading and colorful branches that blend seamlessly into the urban atmosphere. Glazed brick and subway tiles, along with graphic large scale installations by artist Shane Bowden aim to transport patrons to an underworld evocative of a place once forgotten. Intentionality is everything in this space, as even its name denotes a sense of secrecy.

Jidori Chicken Karage

“We’re very excited to share this new space with the community, and look forward to seeing it serve as the social dining atmosphere that we’ve worked so hard to achieve,” says Co-Owner Cesar Vallin. Partnered with Isamu Morikizono (who also owns Tajima), the two restaurateurs have honed their ambition to yield Cloak & Petal – a trendy and chef-inspired concept that merges modern Japanese flair with forward-thinking cuisine and craft cocktails.

Spicy Salmon Battera

At the helm of the kitchen is Executive Chef TJ, hailing from 21 years of experience and time spent in Japan, where he immersed himself in Japanese culinary culture. Bringing his vast expertise to life, Chef TJ has curated the menu to include Japanese small plates, such as Yuzu Kosho Jidori Wings and Spicy Salmon Battera, as well as a variety of sashimi, nigiri and shareable combination platters.
