Bake Sale Cafe and Bakery

Bake Sale Cafe and Bakery Bake Sale will open in Late May

Terryl Gavre’s love of cooking and baking led to the opening of Cafe 222 in Downtown San Diego more than 20 years ago. Now, the mother of two will bring the enjoyment of baking pastries for her children’s school and church bake sales to the opening of her own bakery with Bake Sale, set to open in late May at 815 F St. in the heart of East Village.

“I’ve always wanted a bakery. Always,” said Gavre. “After volunteering to head the bake sale committee at my kid’s school, I decided it was time to finally do it.”

This will be Gavre’s second dining spot to open in the past few months, following ACME Southern Kitchen located around the corner at 901 E St. The tiny 1,100-square-foot bakery will offer: freshly baked morning buns, cinnamon rolls, scones, croissants, muffins, cookies, lemon bars, assorted flavor cakes, brioche buns, biscuits, fruit pies and sandwich bread. Bake Sale will also provide freshly baked selections to Gavre’s other restaurants: ACME Southern Kitchen, Cafe 222 and BANKERS HILL BAR + Restaurant.

A few savory lunch options will include sandwiches featuring Bake Sale’s homemade breads such as curried chicken salad on a brioche bun, grilled turkey, apple and brie on peasant bread and artisan cheese melts. Daily soup specials and specialty take-away salads will be featured along with other cold-case items.

The neighborhood bake shop will offer a casual atmosphere with muted tones, exposed brick walls, white marble countertops, zinc and curtain treatments framing the windows reminiscent of a 1950s bakery.

Bake Sale is located at 815 F St. and offers a wide variety of sweet and savory baked goods to the neighborhood. Located in the heart of downtown, the home-style bakery is owned and operated by local restaurateur, Terryl Gavre. Bake Sale will offer a selection of morning pastries, artisan sandwiches and sweet desserts and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information may be found by calling 619.515.2224, visiting or by following on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @BakeSaleSD.

Terryl Gavre has been working in the restaurant business since the age of 15 and has become one of the better-known restaurateurs in Southern California. A native of Seattle, she initially got started in hospitality through a business which she started in her early 20s called “The Surrogate Wife,” a service in which she cooked, baked, grocery shopped and handled other domestic errands and duties for many of Seattle’s top professional athletes and television personalities. Gavre and her elite list of celebrity-bachelor clients attracted national media attention and she was able to integrate the compelling nature of their job into a made-for-television movie titled “This Wife for Hire.”

In 1992, Gavre used the revenue from the Hollywood production to move to San Diego and open her first restaurant, Cafe 222, which became the foundation for future dining ventures. In addition to Cafe 222, she partnered with Chef Carl Schroeder opening BANKERS HILL BAR + Restaurant in 2010 and most recently opened ACME Southern Kitchen. She will introduce Bake Sale, a neighborhood bakery, at 815 F St., also in Downtown San Diego’s East Village in late May. Her restaurants have received widespread acclaim by the Food Network, Gourmet Magazine and many other national outlets.
